Planters Punch originated in the old Planters Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina on Church Street. Being a historic city with influences from many countries, the island of Jamaica was one of them. This drink started in the early 1800's in a hotel in the historic French Quarter section of town. The building is now the oldest theatre in the country, Dock Street Theatre. A plaque on the wall in the upstairs bar describes the recipe for this wonderful rum drink. One is for sweet, two is for sour. Three is for weak and four is for strong. Charleston is known for many "first" in this country. This is another one. An interesting footnote to this building is the bar upstairs has what is proof of why bars were called bars. They actually have bars that come down from the ceiling above the counter top to close it off.
